A Faith to Live By

Many are experiencing financial difficulties due to the economic downturn our nation is experiencing. We all have friends and/or family members who have lost their jobs and some who have even lost their homes. The Bureau of Labor reports: “The national unemployment rate was 8.9 percent in April 2009, seasonally adjusted, up from 8.5 percent the prior month and from 5.0 percent a year earlier.” (Source: BLS.gov, Mass Layoffs, Monthly – May 2009.) These are challenging times in which to live, and while many have placed their trust in temporal things, they now see that foundation is not as sure as they once thought it was. I invite you to seek refuge in the sure rock of Christ Jesus. And while the Christian has eternal security in which to place his hope, he also has the temporal security of knowing that God is his help, refuge, and strength. Scripture tell us: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. "Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, a

Using Our Gifts for the LORD

“Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; Then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.” – Proverbs 3: 9, 10 “We all have a certain amount of time allotted to us” is the title of an entry in my prayer journal for August 30th. I think prayer is one of the best investments we can make. Oftentimes we find ourselves at the end of our ability to change circumstances or others whom we care about that need our help. And just as often, I have found that if I start with a prayer for a particular person or situation, the Lord will begin to work a change with me. I don’t know about you, but being used by the Lord to bless

Christian Ethics at Work

By Angela Wittman "There is a vast difference between a man who goes to work every day to serve God and a man who goes to work everyday to make money....If a man sells insurance chiefly to make money, he will work to sell his client what will bring him the greatest commission. But if a man sells insurance chiefly to serve God, he will work to sell his client what will best meet the needs of that client. The primary motive for work does matter!" (Taken from: "Whatsoever You Do" A Pastor's Perspective, written by John Sartelle.) "Many Christians, in sales and other careers, are discouraged because they cannot see the eternal significance of their work. Some adhere to the idea that the best careers are those in "full time Christian service,"; which is taken to mean work as a pastor, missionary, teacher in a Christian school, or some such work. Certainly the work of pastors and missionaries is important. However, even a job seemingly far removed from
