A Christian Prayer for America
“Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
“I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
“Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.” (Psalm 2)
On July 12th of this year, the United States Senate was opened with the prayer of a Hindu chaplain. A Christian family in the audience bravely lifted up the Name above all names – Jesus Christ as the Hindu chaplain began to speak. The Christian man, his wife and daughter were then immediately removed from the Senate chamber and arrested. The Hindu chaplain then resumed his prayer to an unknown god.
In response to this event, I have written a Christian prayer for America:
Dear Father in Heaven,
As the dew from heaven refreshes and moistens the grass of the field, so does your grace refresh the soul of your people. I pray you will revive our hearts and fill us with the Living Water of Your Word.
Help us to see that revival in the Church is more than just a feeling which comes and goes.
Help us to commit to studying Your Word in private and public settings.
Help us to rightly divide Scripture and to cherish the truth found only in Your Word.
Give us grace to live holy obedient lives.
Restrain us from watering down our witness in order to appeal to the world.
Give us strength to stand upon the bedrock of Your Word, while pushing back the tide of evil breaking across this land; seeking to stamp out the fire of the Gospel.
May you bless, encourage and revive your people this day, for we live in a land that is becoming hostile toward us.
Please rise up and make yourself known to the wicked, profane and rebellious who attempt to cast you down as King of kings and Lord of lords.
In Lord Jesus Name I pray, amen.
